    . The illustration shows their building in the years 1873 (pre earthquake), 1886 and 1887 (after rebuilding). The illustration of the building in 1886 shows the destruction caused by the earthquake. The owner of the company, William M. Bird was captured and jailed for running the blockade at Charleston during the Civil War.
